Bacab Eco-Park is all about nature and offers many adventurous ways to experience it.
Over the last 6 years, Bacab Eco Park has gone from an idea to a reality that is getting closer each day to the goal and vision of the owners:- to restore the jungle and at the same time create a destination that has something to please each member of your family or travel group.
An small area of the park, roughly about 35 acres, originally cleared by its past owners as part of a cattle pasture expansion, is now occupied by several thatched roofed buildings housing a reception area, restaurants, bars, gift shops, walkways, the horseback mounting and bike mounting areas as well as the pool and kayak pond. The remaining acreage of the Park contains the trails and waterways for the tours.
From the drive into the park, visitors can enjoy the natural beauty of a broadleaf forest including many hardwood trees that have played a vital role in the history of Belize and continue to be very important to the people of Belize for either construction, medicine or other useful purposes. Mahogany, Ceiba and Sapodilla-the chicle tree, are considered “emergent” trees as they are the giants of a tropical forest and can reach heights exceeding 150 feet, sticking their heads up above the 100 foot upper canopy layer.
Just before reaching the parking lot, our resident rescued crocodiles can often be seen soaking up the sun’s rays along the edge of their private water hole. The walkways leading from the entry buildings to the recreation area and restaurant are lined with flint stones found on the property. Flint was a stone used by the ancient Maya for weapons, tools and eccentrics and many carved pieces were found in the area during the construction phase
Through an on-going, re-forestation project, over 25 varieties of native trees have been re-planted to provide shelter, edible fruit, flowers and leaves for over 250 species of resident and migratory birds, small mammals, butterflies and a couple of reptile species – Green and Spiny-tailed Iguanas. Black Howler monkeys have also approved of this planting effort and are slowly but surely moving back.
