Turneffe Flats Resort

Be pampered in paradise…

Turneffe Flats has long been recognized as one of Belize’s premier saltwater fly fishing, SCUBA diving and marine ecotourism destinations. Located on the Turneffe Atoll, the largest and most biologically diverse coral atoll in the Caribbean, we specialize in superior service for a limited number of guests.

Awaken in your air-conditioned beachfront cabana to an incredible tropical seascape of white sand beach, expansive bonefish flats, lush mangroves and the surf breaking over the reef for miles in either direction. Watch a spectacular sunrise from your verandah and when night falls, the stars look close enough to touch.

We are ideally located to enjoy all of Turneffe’s 250 square miles of expansive flats, healthy coral reef and remarkably rich marine habitat.

Resort

Turneffe Flats is located on the Northeastern side of the Turneffe Atoll on a private point with white sand beach, great vistas and a wadeable bonefish flat right outside the door.

The social center of Turneffe Flats is our Lodge. Incredible views from the upper and lower decks make the Lodge a favorite spot to relax. The Lodge includes our dining dining room, bar, and sitting area as well as our gift shop and fly shop. Meals are served family style.

Meals are a tasty combination of Belizean and International dishes. Fresh seafood, local produce and home-baked pastries are standard fare. Depending upon your plans and your preference, you have the option to take a packed lunch or return for lunch each day.

Following hors d’oeuvres and refreshments in the evening, dinner is comprised of soup or salad, entree and a delicious dessert. Entrees vary among seafood, chicken, pork and beef and we do our best to accommodate special dietary needs. Fishing

For more than two decades, Turneffe Flats has been known as one of the world’s premier flats fishing destinations combining a remarkable fishery with excellent English-speaking guides, top-notch equipment and superior service. The ability to sight-fish for BONEFISH, PERMIT and TARPON on any given day makes Turneffe one of the few places where a Grand Slam is always a possibility.

Turneffe Atoll is the largest of only four coral atolls in the Western Hemisphere, and is best-known for its variety of saltwater fishing. Turneffe Flats is located on a picturesque point with white sand beach and coconut palms. The coral reef is a stone’s throw away and a large bonefish flat is right outside the front door.

Diving

Belize’s Atolls consistently rank among the World’s top dive locations and Turneffe Flats is ideally located to take advantage of Belize’s very best Scuba diving. Our extaordinary dive program offers 18 dives each week including a day of diving at Lighthouse Reef and the Blue Hole, weather permitting.

We easily access more than 60 dive sites around the Turneffe Atoll; and are within an hour’s boat ride to the Blue Hole. At Turneffe Flats, we offer true valet dive service. After putting your dive gear on your porch the first morning, it is washed and set up on the dive boat the remainder of the week. All you need to do is walk to the dive boat after a delicious breakfast and head for one of our exceptional dive sites.

We emphasize personalized service for a limited number of divers, generally no more than twelve on our Pro 48. Our superb dive team is led by Belize’s Tour Guide of the Year, Alex Edwards, and they make every effort to ensure that your stay at our tropical paradise is as comfortable and carefree as possible.

We recognize that a dive vacation is more than just diving, and we do our best to make your entire experience something special. While diving throughout the Turneffe Atoll, you will see a variety of hard and soft corals as well as all of the Caribbean tropicals, eagle rays, sharks, turtles, dolphins, moray eels, and occasionally a whale shark in addition to large schools of permit, horse eye jacks and dog snapper.

Eco Adventure

Explore the wonders and the beauty of the Turneffe Atoll. This is a unique marine eco-adventure experience featuring snorkeling, birding or one of several other fun and informative activities. Or, if you are so-inclined, you can stay at the resort and lounge on our beach. Every day offers a great new adventure and a perfect opportunity to relax – that’s what our Atoll Adventure is all about.

Atoll Adventurers choose from a variety of daily guided activities led by one of our experienced Atoll Adventure guides (Abel Coe pictured), all of whom are informative and fun. Our 25 foot canopied boat is at your guide’s disposal for exploring the reefs, mangroves, creeks and lagoons that make Turneffe the largest and most biologically diverse atoll in the Caribbean. Snorkeling is one activity that you will want to experience with Turneffe’s world-class snorkeling featuring warm Caribbean waters, a myriad of tropical reef creatures and incredible coral structures. Our guides are masters at helping everyone feel comfortable in the water and beginners can learn to snorkel on our sandy shore before visiting the reef. With at least 60 species of birds at Turneffe, birding is another highlight. You may also want to tour the atoll looking for manatees and dolphins or enjoy an afternoon kayaking. Our Atoll Adventure Program is very flexible and is tailored to fit the particular interests of each group.

Turneffe has a fascinating history, including Mayan fishing and trading settlements dating to 400 A.D. Turneffe was also a favored hideout for the notorious pirate, Blackbeard. For most guests, learning about the history of Turneffe as well as the fascinating history of Belize is one of the more enjoyable parts of their visit.

Our top Atoll Adventure guide, Abelino “Abel” Coe, was born and raised in a Mayan community in Southern Belize and his first language was Maya. Abel is an avid student of Mayan history and he is well-versed in Belize’s history. Days with Abel are informative and fun. He knows the flora and fauna of Turneffe intimately and is very adept and finding all of the interesting things. Abel is an excellent snorkeler and makes his guests feel comfortable visiting the underwater wonders at Turneffe.

There are several Atoll Adventure tours for the group to enjoy including those listed below. Please see Activity Options on the drop down menu under Atoll Adventure for the details of each tour.

Our family of 7 had a wonderful week at Turneffe Flats. Two of us were Atoll Adventurers (snorkeling into wonderous sites, having lunch with manatees along side, shelling!) and the others fished (successfully and to their hearts content!), scuba-ed (diving the Blue Hole and swimming with dolphins in the wild!), and occasionally joined us. After hearing about our adventures with Abel (our expert Guide, Teacher and now, happily, Friend) they couldn’t resist an outting with Abel, too. All of this, plus the beauty and peace of Turneffe, made for great memories and, by the way, “refreshed our very souls”. ,
The accommodations at Turneffe Flats are excellent and the hospitality and professionalism of the individuals there are unsurpassed.
We’re returning…hope our paths cross at Turneffe Flats!

I had the experience of a life time at Turneffe Flats resort and one that I never experienced. I’m not a diver, nor fisher(wo)man, nor snorkeler (I’m afraid of being over my head) so I brought books to read while my husband fly fished. He had remembered TF from an Orvis video (yes VHS!) that he received years ago. Must have been a great video as the experienced stayed with him and it was his dream to fish the salt water flats in Belize. When it came time for me to sign up for an “adventure” week – I just assumed it would be ‘reading on the beach’. I didn’t know about Abel, I didn’t know about the snorkeling in Belize, I didn’t know about the reefs, and I didn’t know about the people of this beautiful country. Well, I fell in love with Turneffe Flats, and the snorkeling, and the food, and the sunny days. and the sunrises and the sunsets, and of course that magnificent blue/turquoise water. The plane ride to Belize is super easy. Miami and then you are at Belize City airport in just a few hours. The airport is tiny and very easy to manage. We took a taxi to the dock where TF Resert staff awaited. The boat ride over to TF was very memorable.. sun setting and a whole new adventure ahead. Courtney warmly greeted us at the dock and warmly welcomed us to enjoy island cocktails and appetizers. We introduced ourselves to the other guests and enjoyed a lovely dinner with the group. The stars that night were amazing.. The next morning we joined the other guests for a lovely breakfast. My husband went off fishing for the day – all excited. What ever he didn’t bring with him, the staff provided for him. I on the other hand was getting ready for a day of reading and that was when I was introduced to Abel. He suggested that I try snorkeling. I told him about my fears. He said ‘no problem’ and boated me out to the flats with just about 3 feet of gorgeous water with fish and coral. I was amazed, mesmerized and it was all over for me. The fear was gone as the beauty of underwater life just sucked me in. Every day we went a little deeper and I was so okay as Abel held my hand and we snorkeled together. And on Thursday, I snorkeled over the Blue Hole and you should have done your research by now on that one – so you know how many feet i was snorkeling in. It was amazing! AMAZING! I have posted all of my vacation shots on FB and I can’t tell you how many people have commented on them. It really was a trip of a lifetime, and I can’t wait to experience Belize with my new sense of appreciation of the ocean and its ecosystem, and with my own snorkeling equipment and underwater digital camera! I also cannot wait to see my friends at TF Resort. I so miss hanging with Cameron, Courtney, Alex, Abel, John, Dobbs. I miss the food (although I bought the TF cookbook and the spices so I enjoy the cuisine at home.) I miss drinking Pantie Rippers (you’ll find out when you visit TF) before dinner…. But I really miss the amazing underwater life that surrounds this very amazing island in Belize. You better Belize it!

Regretfully, I forgot some key points and would like to amend my review now. Why do you book at a resort? Customer Services, Amenities, Cleanliness, Safety, Food/Beverage. OMG – how could I forget to even mention these for TF.

TF is one big large caye (pronounced key) with only 3 other resorts on the caye.. but you’ll never see them – nor anyone else from the resorts, only by boat . So you really have the time to get to know the other guests and the staff, and the staff’s dogs if you wish! I wish to rate the Staff as 10′s. All of them! They are courteous, respectful, most helpful in any way possible, and easy to communicate with. Basically, each one wishes you to have the best experience while you are on *vacation. The Guides – there is more to say about them than space. They take their job seriously as you have to be certified by the country to be deemed ‘an official guide of Belize’. There is training involved and they abide by their Country’s mission – to never compromise the land nor sea. They keep ‘eco-friendly 24/7 – which is really a wonderful thing to experience. Taught me a lot. The guides are very knowledgeable in what they do – as they are experienced. I loved spending my days with Abel who is in charge of the Eco-Adventure. I learned so much about the wildlife, the undersea life, the culture and the people. My husband experienced the same from Dobbs – who is the best guide for fishing – hands down. You should see him in action. It is an amazing sight watching him cast and land a fish -not to mention finding the fish in the first place! The dining staff (to include wait staff and chefs) are all outstanding. We gave them all a Standing “O” during our last meal. The amenities – there is a new salt water infinity pool which I am drooling over – watched it being built on FB and I can’t wait to return to experience it. The bungalows include a nice sized shared deck over looking the water; king bed bedroom and spacious seating area; newly renovated spacious and luxurious bathroom (that I would love to have in my own home). There is a very spacious lounge area in the building with the dining area which is great to hang out in, complete with a full library of everything you would want to know about the land and sea. Snorkeling on own is accessible right off the beach. Many casters are off shore at 4 am before breakfast, after you get back with your guide in late afternoon and after dinner.

They are very helpful and supportive with any plans extending your vacation off the island as well.

Safety – the guides are always on top of it – no matter what activities you participation in. So is the Staff on land. The rooms have locks and you can lock valuables away with the mgt.

Dress is casual to fun casual as I love dressing up a bit for dinner. But bring what you feel comfortable with as the lows are in the high 80′s – land or water. Light breath-able and comfortable will do it. Don’t make the mistake I did – long sleeves and pants are not needed.

Have to put in a plug for the Blue Hole – snorkeling and diving. JUST DO IT! And go visit the Boobies! Plus, this island has GREAT snorkeling.

*I know that Courtney and Cameron (Mgrs) assisted other guests with changes and confirmation with their extended travel plans on the mainland, so I know they will be very helpful if you are visiting the ruins or other cayes. We had an extended week at Roberts Resort in Placencia which we booked on our own so we got to experience another part of the Belizian life!

Okay – thanks for reading my two reviews. Can you tell I can’t wait to return? I check the airlines daily – I’m serious!
