Video of Black Hole Drop Rappelling

The “mother of all caves” Actun Loch Tunich is a massive limestone sinkhole where you will repel straight down over 300 feet…

The Black Hole is a large sinkhole where the ground has caved into an underlying cave, forming a huge hole in the ground that drops 300 feet. The hike to the sinkhole takes about an hour, going over 4 hills. It can be a strenuous hike but u will go at a comfortable pace. As you head up the 4th hill you get your first view of the massive sinkhole and looking at the cliff face you begin to get butterflies about repelling off of it. You’ll then hike around the edge of the sinkhole until you get to the rappelling point. Your caving guides will rig a system of rappelling ropes for you to descend to the basin below. As you lean over the edge you’ll feel a rush of adrenaline. This is by far the hardest part, learning to trust the rope. It’s a bit scary at first, but you’ll quickly get comfortable and then it’s a scenic descent 300 feet to the bottom. The views you’ll take in of the huge sinkhole and surrounding jungle are majestic. The share adventure and exhilaration of the rappelling adventure has given it the status of “mother of all caves”. For those with an adventurous spirit, this cave should not be missed.
