My wife and I chose Belize for our honeymoon because of all it has to offer: beaches, scuba diving, fishing, archaeology and wildlife. We started in San Ignacio Town (Cayo District), where we toured the Maya pyramids of Caracol, swam at Big Rock Waterfall, explored Rio Frio Cave and spelunked the ATM Cave (our favorite). Our archaeological guide Sergio Paiz and ATM Cave guide Carlos Panti were very knowledgeable and friendly. Our hotel in San Ignacio, Martha’s Guesthouse, was very comfortable and a great value.
Then we jumped on a boat with Captain Fermin, who took us to the quiet and remote coral island of Tobacco Caye where we stayed at Tobacco Caye Lodge. While there we completed our scuba dive certifications and swam with corals, fish, stingrays and sea turtles! We spent our afternoons snorkeling and relaxing on the beach. Our scuba instructor, Carlos of Blue Marlin Lodge, was a very laid back, safe and patient instructor.
We spent our final nights at a vacation rental in Caye Caulker managed by Caye Caulker Accommodations. We went fly fishing with Captain Raf Alamilla, caught over a dozen fish and cooked our own snapper cakes and pineapple-fried snapper! We also went kayaking and snorkeling around the island. We scuba dived three more times, including a night dive where we saw a squid, hermit crabs and an octopus! If you want to go diving in Caye Caulker, I highly recommend Belize Diving Services. They are very organized and professional, and they have the nicest boats, instructors and equipment (all divers get computers). On our last day Ras Creek, a bohemian nature-lover, took us on a boat tour to swim with and pet the nurse sharks and stingrays at Caye Caulker Shark-Ray Alley!
Overall, in our ten-day Belize Honeymoon, we were impressed with the friendliness and hospitality of the Belizean people. We have traveled to several other countries in the Americas before and we never felt safer and more taken care of than when we were in Belize. Sometimes when traveling in other countries we encounter people who are resentful towards foreigners or others who try to take advantage of tourists, but this was not at all the case in Belize!
Because we had never traveled to Belize before and we wanted to make sure we made the most of our honeymoon, we contacted DiscoveringBelize.com. Alex took the time to really understand our travel preferences and he was extremely helpful in recommending places to go and where to stay. In addition to helping us plan our trip, Alex arranged everything for us (reservations, tours, deposits and transportation), so we could spend more time enjoying our trip knowing that everything was taken care of. We were originally considering planning the trip ourselves, but by the end of our trip we knew we had made a good decision by choosing Alex!
