Lubaantun Maya Ruins

Lubantuun was built entirely without mortar, with only precisely chiseled and perfectly aligned blocks holding it together…

Lubantuun “Place of the Fallen Stones” is beautifully situated atop a valley, cut by the Colombia River. This late Classic ceremonial center (700-900 AD) is the largest site in southern Belize. 11 large structures tower above 5 main plazas and 3 ball courts. Unlike most other Maya ruins, the structures are solid with no doorways and feature rounded corners. Even more incredible, is that the temples were built entirely without the use of mortar. It was an administrative, religious and commercial center, mainly used for festivals and ball games. One of the most important excavated artifacts was the Crystal Skull, carved from an 8 inch cube of rock crystal. Its origin remains a mystery.
